The Ritual

i

Heat the vessel

Pour boiling water over the clay pot, inside and out. This wakes the vessel and steadies the temperature.

ii

Measure by intuition

Fill the pot one-third with dry leaves. More for boldness, less for subtlety. Let the nose decide.

iii

First rinse

Steep for five seconds, then discard. This wash opens the leaves and strips surface dust from the journey.

iv

Patience

Each subsequent steep grows by ten seconds. The tea unfolds differently every time. Listen to it.
